Mr. Rewrite likes to think there's an especially cruel circle of hell reserved for those whose cellphones spew overly peppy ring tones such as Natasha Bedingfield's "Pocketful of Sunshine" on the bus, in class, in line at the grocery store, during vespers, etc., etc. And did you know it's Pocketful, not Pocket Full, of Sunshine? Mr. Rewrite looked it up on the CD jacket.
To be honest, Mr. Rewrite doesn't mind the full song. As the kids on "American Bandstand" used to say, it has a good beat and you can dance to it. But as a ring tone "Pocketful of Sunshine" comes off as Muzak for the damned.
Anyway, Mr. Rewrite was surprised the other day to learn the AP Stylebook has an entry calling for ring tone, two words. He'd been thinking one word but was relieved that AP settled the issue for him.
