This post won't invoke feelings of shame

An editorial today tells Mr. Rewrite that an elected official understood that a recent move tied to illegal immigration "would invoke instant anger" among some.

The correct word in this context is evoke.

Mr. Rewrite invokes the spirit of Bryan A. Garner (cue angelic chorus) to solve this one ...

Use evoke when something elicits or draws forth emotions, memories, guffaws, etc., in others.

Invoke is more active; a person invoking cites someone or something as an authority, calls upon a person, that person's reputation or spirit or a higher power, solicits or entreats, summons or conjures or puts into effect.

Messing this up after reading this thoughtful post will evoke a Charlie Brown-esque "AAARRRRGGGGHHHH" from Mr. Rewrite.
